Flow Meter Selection Chart Overview: Comparing Turndown Ratios and Pressure Drops at a Glance

Quick Answer

Electromagnetic flow meters work best for clean water and wastewater because they give zero pressure drop and 20:1 to 40:1 turndown ratio. For high viscosity oil or diesel, oval gear meters reach turndown up to 100:1 with moderate pressure drop. Coriolis meters offer 20:1 to 100:1 turndown and direct mass flow but pressure drop rises at high flow.

Why Turndown Ratio and Pressure Drop Go Together

Turndown ratio tells you how far a meter can go below maximum flow and still stay within specified accuracy. A meter with 40:1 turndown can measure 40 m3/h down to 1 m3/h. Pressure drop is permanent energy loss through the meter body. Both affect pump size and operating cost. A high turndown meter may look good on paper but cause pump upgrades if pressure drop is high. Most engineers skip this part until commissioning.

In practice you should first list your minimum and maximum flow. Then calculate pressure drop at maximum flow for each candidate. After that compare the actual operating range to the published turndown ratio. Because a meter with 100:1 turndown is only helpful when your flow range really changes that much.

Flow Meter Selection Chart Overview

The values below are typical for standard industrial meters from Silver Automation Instruments. Always confirm with your process data before ordering.

Electromagnetic flow meter. Turndown ratio 20:1 to 40:1. Pressure drop near zero for full bore sensors. Pipe size DN15 to DN3000. Minimum fluid conductivity 5 µS/cm. Works with clean water, wastewater, brine, chemical slurries and pulp stock. Not for oil or gas. We supplied electromagnetic flow meters to a desalination plant in Perth and a textile wastewater station in Vietnam.

Coriolis mass flow meter. Turndown ratio 20:1 to 100:1 depending on model. Pressure drop from 0.2 bar to 2.5 bar at high flow. Sizes DN02 to DN300. Measures mass flow, density and temperature. Good for palm oil, solvents, food sauces, LPG, adhesives and chemicals. A paint manufacturer in Southeast Asia replaced a turbine meter with a DN25 Coriolis meter and eliminated separate density compensation.

Ultrasonic flow meter. Turndown ratio 20:1 to 30:1. Clamp on models create zero pressure drop. Inline models give low pressure drop. Pipe size DN15 to DN6000. Used for large water transfer, district cooling, seawater intake and mining water return. Pipe wall condition matters. We quoted clamp on ultrasonic meters for a copper mine in Chile that needed flow data on slurry return water without cutting the pipe.

Vortex flow meter. Turndown ratio 10:1 to 30:1. Pressure drop moderate because of the bluff body. Sizes DN15 to DN300. Requires straight run of 15D upstream and 5D downstream. Works with steam, compressed air, natural gas and saturated steam. Avoid viscous liquids. A steam boiler house in UAE uses vortex meters on boiler feed and steam distribution lines.

Oval gear flow meter. Turndown ratio 10:1 to 100:1 at higher viscosities. Pressure drop depends on viscosity and flow. Sizes DN04 to DN100. Measures diesel, heavy fuel oil, lube oil, molasses and additives. Positive displacement type. A lube oil blending plant in Malaysia uses oval gear meters for base oil batch dosing because they catch very low flow rates.

Thermal mass flow meter. Turndown ratio up to 100:1 for gas. Pressure drop low for insertion probe models. Sizes DN15 to DN1000 or insertion. Direct mass flow for air,

nitrogen, biogas and flare gas. Not for liquids. We often quote thermal mass meters for biogas lines at palm oil mills in Indonesia.

Pair the selected flow meter with a pressure transmitter and paperless recorder when you need flow totalizing plus pressure trend. Silver Automation Instruments supplies both from one source.

How to Use This Chart Without Overengineering

Start with fluid type and conductivity. If the liquid is water based and conductivity is above 5 µS/cm, electromagnetic is usually the first shortlist. If the fluid is oil or gas, skip electromagnetic. Check the minimum flow. Positive displacement and Coriolis meters handle low flows better than vortex meters. Calculate pressure drop at maximum flow. Then compare straight run. Electromagnetic and oval gear meters need less straight run than vortex or inline ultrasonic meters.

Most engineers skip the viscosity check. Vortex meters lose accuracy below Reynolds number 20 000. Oval gear and Coriolis meters are better for thick fluids. Thermal mass meters are for gas only. Do not use a thermal mass meter on liquid. Do not use an electromagnetic meter on diesel because conductivity is too low or zero.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Which flow meter has the highest turndown ratio and lowest pressure drop? Full bore electromagnetic flow meters have near zero pressure drop and 20:1 to 40:1 turndown. Clamp on ultrasonic meters also give zero pressure drop but turndown is lower at 20:1 to 30:1. For gas, thermal mass meters can reach 100:1 with low pressure drop in insertion form.

2. Can I use an electromagnetic flow meter for diesel? No. Diesel is non conductive. Electromagnetic meters need minimum conductivity around 5 µS/cm. Use an oval gear flow meter or Coriolis mass flow meter for diesel, heavy fuel oil or other hydrocarbons.

3. What is a good turndown ratio for wastewater flow measurement? Wastewater plants often vary from night minimum to day maximum. Look for 20:1 to 40:1 turndown. Full bore electromagnetic flow meters fit this range and do not add pressure drop. Choose PN10 or PN16 flanges based on line pressure. Use hard rubber or PTFE liner depending on chemical dosing.

4. Why does Coriolis pressure drop increase at high flow? Coriolis sensors use bent or straight tubes. Flow goes through narrow internal tubes to create high velocity and measurable mass flow signal. At high flow the fluid velocity increases and friction loss rises. You can reduce pressure drop by selecting a larger Coriolis sensor but low flow accuracy may decrease.

5. Do I need straight run for oval gear and electromagnetic meters? Oval gear meters do not need long straight run. Electromagnetic meters need about 5D upstream and 2D downstream in most installations. Vortex and inline ultrasonic meters need longer straight run. Check the manufacturer recommendation for your pipe layout.
