Sliding Vane vs Oval Gear: Which One Should You Specify?

Both sliding vane and oval gear meters belong to the positive displacement family. They measure flow by trapping a known volume inside a rotating measuring chamber. The output is a pulse train. Each pulse represents a fixed volume.

Oval gear meters use two machined gears that rotate together. Because they trap a fixed volume between the gears, they ignore viscosity swings better than turbine meters. They handle clean liquids with a wide viscosity range. Fuels, lubricants, solvents, and food grade oils are common. Sliding vane meters use spring loaded vanes inside a rotor. They are tougher for intermittent flow and can handle some suspended particles better than oval gear meters.

Here is the thing. If your fluid is lubricating and clean, oval gear often costs less and gives excellent repeatability. If the flow starts and stops often, a sliding vane meter may last longer. Most engineers skip this part and pick based on price alone. But on a batching line with three shifts, the wrong choice shows up as drift within months.

Where These Meters Work Best

We have seen these meters on customer sites many times. A paint manufacturer in Southeast Asia needed to measure alkyd resin at 2,500 cP. Turbine meters failed quickly. An oval gear meter with stainless steel gears held a stable reading for more than two years. The customer used a 4 to 20 mA HART output to the plant PLC.

Last year a customer in Vietnam asked us for a sliding vane meter for marine diesel oil blending. Line pressure was 16 bar. Flow range was 15 to 150 L/h. A DN15 sliding vane meter with aluminum body and pulse output worked without vibration related drift. Because the meter output a pulse for every fixed volume, the batching system totalized accurately even at low flow.

Typical uses include diesel generator consumption, fuel oil transfer, chemical injection, adhesive dosing, edible oil bottling, hydraulic oil test stands, and urea solution dispensing. If you work with water like chemicals below 1 cP, a positive displacement meter may still work, but other types like electromagnetic or ultrasonic can be cheaper.

Accuracy, Repeatability, and What You Can Expect

Most standard oval gear and sliding vane meters from Silver Instruments offer accuracy of 0.5% of reading under stable conditions. Repeatability is often 0.05% or better on the same batch. Repeatability matters more than absolute accuracy in dosing. A fixed volume per pulse gives the PLC a clean totalizer signal.

For diesel fuel measurement on a generator, a DN15 oval gear meter can read 20 to 200 L/h with a K factor around 100 to 500 pulses per liter depending on the chamber size. Installation Mistakes That Cause Meter Failures
