Do not install a positive displacement meter upstream of a pump without a bypass and pressure relief valve. Sudden pump startup can create pressure spikes that damage the measuring chamber. We have seen oval gear meters split their housings because a valve closed too fast. In practice, a simple check valve and a bypass loop prevent most damage.
