Refrigerant Flow Meter ATEX Certified: Meeting Strict European Directives for Combustibles
Quick Answer: Silver Automation Instruments supplies refrigerant flow meters with full ATEX certification for Zone 1 and Zone 2 hazardous areas. You get direct mass flow measurement of flammable refrigerants like R-290, R-600a, and R-32 without extra density compensation. Send us your refrigerant type, pressure (bar), temperature (°C), pipe size (DN), and required flow range for a quotation.
Why ATEX Certification Is Not Optional for Combustible Refrigerants
Refrigeration and heat pump systems are moving fast to natural refrigerants. Propane (R-290) and isobutane (R-600a) are highly flammable. These gases belong to gas group IIC and demand equipment certified under ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU. In practice, any installation inside the EU and many projects in the Middle East or Southeast Asia will reject a flow meter that lacks the correct Ex marking.
Most engineers skip the theory and go straight to the certificate. Our Coriolis flow meters come with a Notified Body certificate for ATEX II 2G Ex ia IIC T6 Gb. That means the meter can sit in a zone where explosive gas is present under normal operation. A paint manufacturer in Malaysia recently asked for this exact certificate before they could commission their chiller upgrade. They use R-290 for process cooling. We provided the ATEX flow meter, the declaration of conformity, and a full calibration report.
Coriolis Mass Flow Meters Solve the Hard Part of Refrigerant Measurement
You cannot measure refrigerant the way you measure water. Vapor quality changes, density shifts, and plant operators need real mass flow to confirm cooling capacity. Vortex meters or turbine meters struggle here. A Coriolis mass flow meter from Silver Instruments gives you mass flow, density, and temperature in one instrument. No need for separate pressure and temperature compensation.
Here is the thing. With a Coriolis meter you also catch two-phase flow early. A chilled water plant in Vietnam asked us last year about fluctuating readings on their old vortex meter. When we installed a CMF series ATEX Coriolis, they saw density variation flagging gas carryover. Output options are 4-20 mA HART, pulse, and Modbus RTU. Process connections range from DN15 to DN50, with 316L stainless steel wetted parts and PTFE or graphite gaskets compatible with most refrigerant oils.
Direct Compliance with European Directives and Local Regulations
ATEX certification is not a paper exercise. Each meter we ship for combustible refrigerants meets EN 60079-0 and EN 60079-11 standards. The Ex ia intrinsic safety design limits stored energy so it cannot ignite a gas-air mixture. We also offer the same meter with IECEx certification for countries that recognize the IECEx scheme, including Australia, Singapore, and Saudi Arabia. A single unit can carry both ATEX and IECEx labels if your project straddles regions.
Beyond ATEX, the flow meter complies with the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) and carries CE marking. This matters when you design a packaged chiller for export. We have seen many times an OEM in China or Turkey buying a flow meter and then getting stuck at factory acceptance test because the third-party inspector did not see the right mark

How to Specify an ATEX Refrigerant Flow Meter
You do not need to be an instrumentation engineer. Just send us five data points: refrigerant name, operating pressure in bar, temperature in degrees Celsius, pipe size in DN, and the normal and maximum flow in kg/h. If you know the hazardous zone classification, that helps. If not, our engineers can work it out from the P and ID.
One more thing. If you are measuring liquid refrigerant at the condenser outlet, the meter often needs a back pressure valve to prevent flashing. We can advise on that. A customer in Argentina running an ammonia heat pump sent us a photo of their skid. We recommended a DN15 Coriolis meter with a remote transmitter to keep electronics away from a hot pipe. They ordered four units after testing the first one.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. What refrigerants can the ATEX flow meter handle?
Our Coriolis meters measure most common flammable refrigerants: R-290, R-600a, R-1270, R-32, R-1234yf, R-454B, and anhydrous ammonia. The wetted material is 316L stainless steel. For ammonia we can supply a special certificate for stress corrosion resistance. Just mention the refrigerant when you ask for a quote.
2. Does the meter work for liquid, gas, or two-phase refrigerant?
The Coriolis principle works best on single-phase liquid. It can handle gas but we need to know your expected density. If the stream is mostly liquid with some vapor, the meter will detect density drops and you can use that signal for diagnostics. We do not recommend a Coriolis meter for pure gas flow below 5 kg/h because the accuracy drops.
3. What output signals can I get?
Standard outputs include one 4-20 mA with HART, one pulse or frequency output, and one Modbus RTU channel. Optional second 4-20 mA for density or temperature is available. The transmitter is remote mount with a 5-meter cable. Longer cable is possible.
4. Which ATEX zones are covered?
Our standard ATEX flow meter is rated II 2G Ex ia IIC T6 Gb for gas environments in Zone 1. For Zone 2 we can supply a lower cost version but most industrial projects buy the Zone 1 meter for flexibility. Dust certification II 2D Ex tb IIIC T85°C Db is optional.
5. What is the delivery time for an ATEX-certified meter?
Small sizes DN15 to DN25 usually ship within 2 weeks after order confirmation. Bigger sizes up to DN50 may need 3 to 4 weeks because of longer lead times on custom flanges. If you need a rush order, mention it in your email. We have stock for the most common models.
