# Seawater Flow Meter for Desalination Plants: How to Choose the Right One
**Quick Answer:** For seawater desalination, choose a magnetic flow meter for brine and product water, and a Coriolis flow meter for chemical dosing. Silver Automation Instruments offers DN15 to DN600 magnetic meters with Hastelloy electrodes and PTFE linings to handle saltwater corrosion. ## Why Seawater Flow Measurement Needs Special Equipment
Seawater is not clean water. It has salt, sand, and sometimes biological growth. A standard flow meter will fail in weeks. We have seen this many times at customer sites. A plant in the Middle East tried a turbine meter for brine. The bearings corroded in 10 days. They called us for a replacement.
Most engineers skip this part. They pick a flow meter based on price. But seawater desalination has three distinct flow applications. Each needs a different meter.
### 1. Raw Seawater Intake
You need a meter that handles debris. The water comes straight from the ocean. Sand, shells, and seaweed are common. A magnetic flow meter works here. It has no moving parts. The liner must be PTFE or rubber. The electrodes need to be Hastelloy C276 or titanium.
For a desalination plant in Southeast Asia, we supplied a DN200 magnetic meter. The line pressure was 5 bar. Flow rate was 800 m³/h. The meter has been running for 18 months without issues.
### 2. Brine Discharge
Brine is the concentrated saltwater left after desalination. Its density can be 1.1 to 1.2 g/cm³. The salinity is about 70,000 ppm. This is aggressive.
Use a magnetic flow meter with a ceramic liner. Or use a PTFE liner with extra thickness. The temperature can reach 40°C to 50°_600x400.jpg)
