Limits and Better Alternatives


Do not use a float type flow meter for slurry, dirty water with solids, high viscosity above 50 cP, or heavy pulsating flow. The float can stick. The scale reading can fluctuate and become useless. For diesel, gasoline, or heavy oil, an oval gear flow meter is a better fit. For conductive wastewater, an electromagnetic flowmeter gives stable readings with no moving parts. For high accuracy mass measurement, a Coriolis mass flow meter is the right choice.


If your fluid is steam or saturated gas above 200°C, a vortex flow meter handles the temperature better. If your line is large, perhaps DN300 or above, an ultrasonic flow meter may offer easier installation without cutting the pipe. Rotameters are not the cheapest option above DN100. Installation and Commissioning Notes


Install the meter vertically with flow upward. The inlet straight run should be at least 5 DN. The outlet run can be 3 DN. Avoid vibration and strong magnetic fields on metal tube units with magnetic followers. A bypass line helps maintenance. Build a valve manifold if the process line cannot be stopped. Most engineers skip this part but installation angle is the main cause of wrong readings.
